Child Psychiatry Apex Area Practitioners Can Provide Help For Mental Disorders

By Sherry Gross

It is usually unexpected to see indications of mental disturbances in children. But, statistically, a fourth of all children and adolescents will suffer a psychiatric disorder in any year. For those looking for help and care for child psychiatry Apex is a location that has many professionals to provide it.

Depression strikes approximately two percent of all children under twelve years old. That percentage rises to four percent among adolescents. Children also suffer from behavioral issues and anxiety disturbances.

Most cases of alcohol or drug addiction involve adolescents. They can also be subject to bipolar disorder, formerly referred to as manic depressive disorder. Schizophrenia typically begins in the late teens or early twenties. It can, however, appear at an earlier age.

There is no single trait that causes mental illness in children. Some are biological, others are psychological or environmental. Causal factors that are biological in origin are related to levels of dopamine or serotonin that are atypical.

Sometimes the size of some lobes are larger or smaller than in people who are not mentally disturbed. Some areas of the physical brain may be more active in those with mental disturbances. Gender may play a role. Girls seem to be suffering from mood disorder more frequently than boys.

A genetic predisposition may be present in children with a mentally ill parent. This might be attributed to childhood trauma, however. Children with a parent who is disturbed are four times as likely to develop a disorder themselves. Thus, the nature versus question is raised.

In the case of emotionally disturbed parents, they are not likely to be capable of providing a stable environment. The youngster may suffer emotional or physical abuse. If a parent dies or the subject is bullied at school, these can predispose him or her to develop a mental illness.

Mental illnesses occur for many other reasons. Some examples are poverty, divorce and constant fighting in the home. The patient may show a disturbance by acting bored, doing poorly in school or having nightmares. He or she may regress to bedwetting or other earlier behavior problems.

When psychiatric care is indicated, it may include prescription medication. Frequently, the combination of medication and psychotherapy are effective more than medication alone. Childhood schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and clinical depression usually must be controlled with medication.

Clinical depression can be made worse if the child is taking a medicine to treat a physical disorder. This may be a medicine they need to maintain good physical health. In many cases, if medication for the mental illness is used in conjunction with counseling, the improvement is more rapid.

Children will be treated for a minimum time period of six months. They can improve significantly and learn to get along with family members and children at school. When there is no treatment provided, they are likely to get worse.

Children who need antidepressants may respond well to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. These are usually safe and effective. They work by altering serotonin levels. Bipolar disorder can be managed by Risperidone, Quetapine or Aripiprazole. These are prescribed for children ten and older. Any treatment using medication requires close psychiatric monitoring.
